...bake ornaments!!!! I have made some serious baking errors over the years and had vowed never to bake again (hey, i can buy baked goods cheaper) LOL!
However, when I was talking to Patti the other day she said that she'd made these great white ornaments for the girls to paint! She encouraged me to try it saying, "there's only 3 ingredients, you can do it!" (Translation: "even you can't mess these up")
So, I put the three ingredients in the pot (2 cups baking soda, 1 cup cornstarch, 1 1/4 cup of water), stir till they become mashed potatoe-like consistency and put it outside to cool. This is what it looked like after:
What the fudge? That is NOT dough!!! That is a crumbly mess that I tried to smoosh and knead into a mountain!!! ARGH!!............and i haven't even gotten to the BAKING part yet!!! YIKES!!!
Emergency call to Patti -
"What did I do wrong?"
"Sounds like not enough water."
"But i measured the water"
"Let me google it"
{{long pause}}
"I have no idea what you've done"
"Fantastic, I'm trying again, I'll call when I've made another mess of it"
{{{laughing at me}}} "Bye"
Second Batch: Woo Hoo, I make dough! Even more impressive, I figured out what I did wrong the first time! I trusted the baking soda box when it said 250 grams (which is a cup)! This time i measured everything like I was a scientist on the verge of a breakthrough! Those darn boxes had at least 1/3 of a cup more!!!
Here I am mid cutting:
And here they are about to go in the oven! (*note: they are so white and perfect and FLAT at the moment - more on that later)
So I blithely put them in the oven and go to cut some more when Snuffy says, "I smell smoke!"
What the HECK???
I say, "NO WAY, they've only been in the oven 4 minutes, they can't be burning!!!"
Snuffy opens the oven and a HUGE BILLOW OF SMOKE COMES OUT!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
BUT, it's not the ornaments burning, it's the wax paper! Who knew you weren't supposed to put it in the oven? {ok, so maybe YOU knew, but I didn't!!! why didn't you tell me???)
Then when they are done I take them out of the oven and let them cool, but they look weird, rather pregnant actually! What the heck happened in there???
They are all blown up in the middle and I just KNOW that my aggressive mini-beasts are going to attack them with paint brushes and burst right through the middle and then that paint is going to rot inside and we are going to have toxic funk ornaments ............................................................................................................................................. Sigh...........................What the heck made me think I could bake ANYTHING? Even if it was just an ornament and not food (where what I do wrong can actually kill someone)???
I vow, NEVER to bake again {{{again}}}!!!
Laterg8r
PS - there MUST be a NO BAKE option!! HELP!!!

Hmmm what about play dough that you let dry?? Crayola makes some dough that hardens after some time. Maybe not by Christmas, but it does harden! Or they sell the plaster white ornaments that you paint yourself. Most craft stores sell them, but they go fast so hurry and check!

OH dear Carrie...this has truly been a trying experience!!!! I must admit I had a giggle about the wax paper incident.....
I cannot imagine what made them rise in the center!!!
I truly love to bake...but have never tried these out...I am off to google and see what it says!!!!
:) :) u funny girl ! No help here, cause i don't bake too ...
THank you so much for sharing this mishap!! It made me laugh at the pregnant ornaments so hard I almost sniffed out my lunch gravy (which IS different then dinner gravy in case you wanted to know lol j/k) thanks for the laugh and sorry it didn't work out for you!
Carrie, I don't cook and when I do, I make a huge mess of everything! I have put stuff in the microwave that shouldn't have gone in, started a fire in the oven, etc....I have done much worse!
Thanks for the laugh sweet one!

HHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Ha, Ha, Ha!!!
Hee, Ha, Ha!
Stay away from the oven; you are cursed. Baking soda makes things rise so your ornaments might look pregnant because they are suppose to look pregnant. I would go to Michaels and pick up some plaster ready to paint ornaments.
okay ... i now understand why you dont bake ... thank goodness you do so many other things soooo very well!
ps, got your card ... its beautiful! thank you :)
LMAO...Ok, so I CAN bake and the same thing happend to me with these. They were also knocked up santas and snowmen...so...I never made them again and do paper crafts instead :)
Stick with paper, you rock that! (snicker)
remember that book i gave you with the things to do with kids
it has recipes too
look in it
!!!!
save yourself!!!
OMG!!!!!!!!! This is just too funny!! Thank you so much for a much needed laugh (laughing WITH you of course!!) I couldn't bake/cook to save my life either - don't feel bad! Ever thought of making little, pregnant, gingerbread ladies??
Hmmm...just step away from the oven LOL Hope you find some non-baking crafts to do or if you're game to try agian, from Michael's, I've bought baking clay before to make ornaments and it was pretty easy. You bake it but its really easy...promise.
Oh dear friend...I can't scrap worth a darn but I can bake. Would you like me to bake you some ornaments? Good gravy...what an ordeal!
Now can I say that I was laughing my butt off?!
Love and hugs,
Karyn
Oh my gosh your post id too funny! I have no advise really except play dough and let in dry out! Beth
sorry Carrie, this post had me busting a gut! don't give up! practice practice practice :) received your card in the mail today... thanks! it's adorable.
OH my gosh, now that would happen to me if I tried this for sure.
xxx
Hahaha, too funny!
Gosh, I'm so glad that someone else is almost as craft challenged as I am. But at least you remember where you put the ingredients!
Hi! Can you mclinkey up to 12 weeks of Christmas for our tree challenge? I can't get it to link. Did you do one? If yes can you send me the link? I wrote to Keelie but haven't heard back yet and I actually have a post this week!
I will be SO interested to see how all this plays out for you!!
I thought I was already a follower......
I too have done that with waxed paper. I think some of us just need to learn the HARD way that wax and parchment aren't the same things! Good for you for trying though--I think I'd be inclined to hit Michaels and just find something ready-made for my kids to paint. I'm lazy that way!!
lol...oh my goodness, you are so funny! This post was fun to read. ;) It's a super fun idea...but truly frustrating when it just doesn't work out, grr. Your kids are going to love it though!
you know , we can be the queens of scrappin, but I agree with you, I cannot bake, not even slice-n-bake...all my baked goods come from Costco and my grocey store and they do a mighty fine job! I can't make cards and I'm not good at altered projects that require measuring. My problem is that I eyeball everything-when I cook and when I scrapbook-I jsut hate to measure to the cm kind athing.
AM back from NY and will be blogging about the Princess and the Frog-but no movie DETAILS coz I don't wanna give any detailas away, just generalizations-hope you'll hop over and read what I have to say!
